What is the Patio Radio Network?
The Patio Radio Network is a user supported UHF
wide area linked UHF mountain top repeater system that covers Northern California, Central Oregon and
Southern Washington
In the late 1970's, a group of guys got together in
different regions of
California and Oregon with the same dream, to have a linked radio system covering the areas we lived
and traveled in.
Over the years several of us have moved from one place to another and found that
this improved the overall coverage as more and more equipment became functional as we moved around more.
Today we cover the southern Washington, Central Oregon and Northern California. The coverage
is predominately along Interstate 5 stretching from Olympia, Washington to
Merced, California.
This
network to date occupies 16 different mountain tops along the way.
All Primary Repeaters are located
in the 440-449 MHz amateur radio band and all links are generally full duplex types within the 420-425
MHz amateur radio band (we do have a single full duplex 900 Mhz link too).
There are 2 areas
that have remote base capabilities. Mt Shasta has a UHF/VHF remote. Grants Pass has a UHF remote, VHF
remote and 6 meter remote
Additionally, Mt Shasta has a 2 meter repeater and a 6 meter repeater.
You can easily imagine that to have a wide area linked system like this takes the commitment of several
people. We have a selection of users that want and do perpetuate the hobby to its fullest. We also have
the "principles" of this network, the people who give up family & friends to attend to fixes and installations
at mountain tops near their homes and up to a 6 hour drive (one way) to "fix" or repair it during a failure.
It also takes "money". We do encourage and accept contributions to cover our month to month and
upgrade expenses. It is a user supported radio system. The suggested contribution is $75.00 per household
per year. Some pay more, some less and some not at all.
You can get a status report of the system
by by clicking here.
If you have particular question about a particular radio site or area,
please direct that to the Patio Principle for that area or direct general questions to:
Rich KJ6RA.
